Day 4. Wine 2.
This wine reminded me of my younger days in Ottawa, where I had a ritual with cousin roommate M– that every Friday night we would buy a pizza from the IGA grocery store and a one liter bottle of white Giacondi wine. Together we would watch the Much Music countdown for the week. Feeding ourselves was all about volume and low low prices… we were both saving up for our Masters programs, and I remember clearly that my weekly budget for groceries was $25 in those days!
So this wine was reminiscent of those big Italian bottles. But I admit I was happily surprised when this bottle of Italian white turned out to be quite a bit nicer than I remember the old cheap Giacondi being!
Upon opening the bottle, it was unexpectedly aromatic, with fruit notes from lemon, grapefruit, and apple, as well as soft tones of tobacco flower and even wet stone.
On the palate, it had lovely acidity that balanced nicely with the same citrus and apple profile from the nose. Even a bit of minerality? No oak detected at all.
Overall, this wine was easy, inoffensive, and far from one-dimensional. Would pair nicely with creamy pasta dishes, vegetarian pizza, seafood salad, or a cream-based clam chowder.

The Music Match
This wine reminded me of the Much Music countdown, and how we used to get all emotional waiting for our favorite videos to be played. This song/album/video always reminds me of that time in my life:
